Unirational variety

Definition
Let be a field and let be an integral algebraic variety over . The variety is unirational over if there are an integer and a dominant rational map from projective space.
Remarks
Equivalently, the function field embeds over into a purely transcendental extension . Example: every rational variety is unirational, since a birational map is dominant. Example: the curve in is unirational. The map is a dominant morphism from , an open subset of , since and its image is the whole curve. Non-example: a smooth projective curve of genus over is not unirational. A dominant rational map restricts to a nonconstant rational map on a general line, and this extends to a nonconstant morphism . The Riemann–Hurwitz formula would then give , which is false.
