Unitary operator
Builds on Hilbert spaceHilbert space adjoint
Definition
Let be a complex Hilbert space and let be a bounded linear operator with adjoint . The operator is unitary when where is the identity operator of .
Remarks
Example: on the bilateral shift has adjoint , and both and are the identity, so is unitary.
Non-example: on the unilateral shift satisfies , but sends to , so and is not unitary. It is an isometry that is not surjective.
Equivalent forms: is unitary if and only if is surjective and for all , and if and only if is a surjective isometry. In finite dimensions already implies , but in infinite dimensions both conditions are needed, as the unilateral shift shows. The spectrum of a unitary operator lies on the unit circle.
