Definition
Let be or , and let be an associative algebra over , with or without a unit. The unitization of is the vector space with the product It is an associative algebra over with unit . The map embeds in as a two-sided ideal of codimension .
Remarks
One writes as . Every algebra homomorphism from to a unital algebra extends uniquely to a unital homomorphism , by . If is a normed algebra, then makes a normed algebra, complete when is complete. Indeed . For a C*-algebra one uses another norm on , which makes it a C*-algebra. The construction adds a new unit even when already has one.
Example: for , the complex continuous functions that tend to at infinity, is isomorphic to the functions with and . These are the continuous functions on with one common limit at and . They are the continuous functions on the one-point compactification of .
Non-example: the componentwise product on gives no unitization when . For it, , so is not a unit.

What this page needs for W1
- an inventory row: the row of the inventory that the node accounts for (0 of 1)
- a source with a locator (0 of 1)
The writing levels say how complete the text of a page is. They do not measure its truth.
