Universal central extension

Definition
Let be a group. A central extension of is a pair of a group and a surjective homomorphism . Its kernel must lie in the centre of , so that it is a central group extension. A central extension of is universal if, for every central extension of , there is exactly one homomorphism with .
Remarks
A group has a universal central extension if and only if is perfect, that is, . Then the universal central extension is unique up to a unique isomorphism over , and the group is itself perfect. The kernel of is isomorphic to , the Schur multiplier of .
Example: for a ring , the map from the Steinberg group to the group generated by elementary matrices is a universal central extension, with kernel . Example: the map is a universal central extension, with kernel .
Non-example: has no universal central extension. Let be any central extension and let be the first projection, a central extension since is abelian. The maps and are two different homomorphisms with , because is onto and so not zero. So the uniqueness clause fails.
