Definition

Let XX be a path-connected topological space. A universal cover of XX is a covering map p ⁣:X~→Xp \colon \tilde X \to X such that X~\tilde X is simply connected. Here X~\tilde X is simply connected if it is path-connected and its fundamental group π1(X~,x~)\pi_1(\tilde X, \tilde x) is trivial for one, hence every, point x~∈X~\tilde x \in \tilde X.

Remarks

Example: p ⁣:ℝ→S1p \colon \R \to S^1, p(t)=(cos⁡2πt,sin⁡2πt)p(t) = (\cos 2\pi t, \sin 2\pi t), is a covering map. Its total space ℝ\R is path-connected and contractible, so π1(ℝ)=1\pi_1(\R) = 1, and pp is a universal cover of the circle. For n≥2n \ge 2, the quotient map Sn→ℝPnS^n \to \R P^n is a universal cover, because SnS^n is simply connected.

Non-example: the map S1→S1S^1 \to S^1, z↦z2z \mapsto z^2, on the unit circle in ℂ\C is a covering map. Its total space S1S^1 has fundamental group ℤ\Z, so it is not a universal cover.

If XX is connected, locally path-connected and semilocally simply connected, then a universal cover exists. If XX is locally path-connected, two universal covers of XX are isomorphic over XX. A universal cover is often written X~→X\tilde X \to X.

What this page needs for W1

  • an inventory row: the row of the inventory that the node accounts for (0 of 1)
  • a source with a locator (0 of 1)

The writing levels say how complete the text of a page is. They do not measure its truth.
