Definition

Let kk be a field and let ๐”ค\mathfrak g be a Lie algebra over kk with bracket [โ‹…,โ‹…][\cdot, \cdot]. Let T(๐”ค)T(\mathfrak g) be the tensor algebra of the vector space ๐”ค\mathfrak g. Let II be the two-sided ideal of T(๐”ค)T(\mathfrak g) generated by the elements xโŠ—yโˆ’yโŠ—xโˆ’[x,y]x \otimes y - y \otimes x - [x, y] for x,yโˆˆ๐”คx, y \in \mathfrak g. The universal enveloping algebra of ๐”ค\mathfrak g is U(๐”ค)=T(๐”ค)/IU(\mathfrak g) = T(\mathfrak g) / I, together with the map ฮนโ€‰โฃ:๐”คโ†’U(๐”ค)\iota \colon \mathfrak g \to U(\mathfrak g) induced by the inclusion of ๐”ค\mathfrak g in T(๐”ค)T(\mathfrak g).

Remarks

The map ฮน\iota is linear and satisfies ฮน([x,y])=ฮน(x)ฮน(y)โˆ’ฮน(y)ฮน(x)\iota([x, y]) = \iota(x)\iota(y) - \iota(y)\iota(x). Universal property: for every associative algebra AA over kk with identity and every linear map ฯ†โ€‰โฃ:๐”คโ†’A\varphi \colon \mathfrak g \to A with ฯ†([x,y])=ฯ†(x)ฯ†(y)โˆ’ฯ†(y)ฯ†(x)\varphi([x, y]) = \varphi(x)\varphi(y) - \varphi(y)\varphi(x), there is a unique algebra homomorphism ฯ†~โ€‰โฃ:U(๐”ค)โ†’A\tilde\varphi \colon U(\mathfrak g) \to A with ฯ†~โˆ˜ฮน=ฯ†\tilde\varphi \circ \iota = \varphi. Hence representations of ๐”ค\mathfrak g on a vector space VV are the same as left U(๐”ค)U(\mathfrak g)-module structures on VV. Example: if ๐”ค\mathfrak g is abelian, all brackets are 00, so II is generated by the elements xโŠ—yโˆ’yโŠ—xx \otimes y - y \otimes x. Then U(๐”ค)U(\mathfrak g) is the symmetric algebra S(๐”ค)S(\mathfrak g), a polynomial ring in a basis of ๐”ค\mathfrak g. Non-example: for the Lie algebra ๐”ค\mathfrak g with basis x,yx, y and [x,y]=y[x, y] = y, the tensor algebra T(๐”ค)T(\mathfrak g) itself does not satisfy xyโˆ’yx=[x,y]xy - yx = [x, y], since xโŠ—yโˆ’yโŠ—xโ‰ yx \otimes y - y \otimes x \ne y there; one must pass to the quotient.
