Statement

Let 𝒱\mathcal{V} be a variety of signature Οƒ\sigma, and let XX be a nonempty set of variables. Let T(X)T(X) be the term algebra of Οƒ\sigma over XX. Let ΞΈ\theta be the set of pairs (s,t)(s, t) of terms such that the identity sβ‰ˆts \approx t holds in every algebra of 𝒱\mathcal{V}. Then:

  1. ΞΈ\theta is a congruence of T(X)T(X), and the quotient algebra F=T(X)/ΞΈF = T(X) / \theta belongs to 𝒱\mathcal{V}.
  2. With Ξ·(x)=x/ΞΈ\eta(x) = x / \theta, the algebra FF is a free algebra of 𝒱\mathcal{V} on XX. So for every Aβˆˆπ’±A \in \mathcal{V} and every map f ⁣:Xβ†’Af \colon X \to A, there is exactly one homomorphism h ⁣:Fβ†’Ah \colon F \to A with h∘η=fh \circ \eta = f.
  3. For terms s,ts, t over XX, the elements s/ΞΈs / \theta and t/ΞΈt / \theta are equal if and only if 𝒱\mathcal{V} satisfies sβ‰ˆts \approx t.

Remarks

The map ff extends to a homomorphism T(X)β†’AT(X) \to A by evaluating terms, and its kernel contains ΞΈ\theta because AA satisfies every identity of 𝒱\mathcal{V}; this gives hh. To see Fβˆˆπ’±F \in \mathcal{V}, choose, for each pair (s,t)βˆ‰ΞΈ(s, t) \notin \theta, an algebra of 𝒱\mathcal{V} and an assignment that separate ss and tt. The induced maps embed FF in the product of these algebras, and 𝒱\mathcal{V} is closed under subalgebras and products. Example: for 𝒱\mathcal{V} the variety of commutative rings with identity, FF is the polynomial ring β„€[X]\Z[X], and the unique homomorphism is evaluation of polynomials. The variable set must be nonempty only when Οƒ\sigma has no constants and empty algebras are not allowed; otherwise X=βˆ…X = \emptyset is fine and gives the initial algebra of 𝒱\mathcal{V}.

Going deeper

For a student

The theorem gives free groups, free modules, polynomial rings and free lattices by one construction. Part 3 says that the free algebra on countably many generators encodes all identities of 𝒱\mathcal{V}, which links free algebras with equational logic. Every algebra Aβˆˆπ’±A \in \mathcal{V} is a quotient of F𝒱(A)F_{\mathcal{V}}(A), by extending the identity map of AA; presentations by generators and relations come from this. In categorical terms, the construction is a left adjoint to the forgetful functor from 𝒱\mathcal{V} to sets.
