General algebraic systems Free algebras Proposition
Universal property of the free magma
Builds on Free magmaMagmaHomomorphism
Statement
Let be a set, let be the free magma on , and let be the inclusion of the generators. Let be a magma and let be a map. Then there is exactly one magma homomorphism such that .
Remarks
Existence: define by recursion on the construction of elements, with for and .
This recursion is valid because each element of is either a generator or a product for exactly one pair .
Uniqueness: two homomorphisms that agree on agree on all elements, by induction on the construction.
Example: with and for all , the homomorphism sends each element to its number of leaves.
With and , the homomorphism sends each element to the height of its binary tree.
In Mathlib this is FreeMagma.lift, an equivalence between maps and magma homomorphisms .

For a student
The proposition says that the free magma is the free algebra of the variety of all magmas. The free semigroup on has the same kind of universal property, and it is the quotient of by the congruence generated by associativity. Recursive definitions on binary trees, such as size and height, are instances of this proposition.
