Vandermonde matrix

Builds on MatrixCommutative ring

Definition

Let RR be a commutative ring, let m,n≥1m, n \ge 1, and let x1,…,xm∈Rx_1, \dots, x_m \in R. The Vandermonde matrix of x1,…,xmx_1, \dots, x_m with nn columns is the m×nm \times n matrix VV with entries Vij=xi j−1(1≤i≤m, 1≤j≤n),V_{ij} = x_i^{\,j-1} \qquad (1 \le i \le m,\ 1 \le j \le n), where xi0=1x_i^0 = 1.

Remarks

Example: for x1=1x_1 = 1, x2=2x_2 = 2, x3=3x_3 = 3 and n=3n = 3, the matrix is (111124139)\begin{pmatrix} 1 & 1 & 1 \\ 1 & 2 & 4 \\ 1 & 3 & 9 \end{pmatrix}; row ii is (1,xi,xi2)(1, x_i, x_i^2). Non-example: (2439)\begin{pmatrix} 2 & 4 \\ 3 & 9 \end{pmatrix} is not a Vandermonde matrix, because a Vandermonde matrix has first column 1,…,11, \dots, 1. It is obtained from the Vandermonde matrix (1213)\begin{pmatrix} 1 & 2 \\ 1 & 3 \end{pmatrix} of 2,32, 3 by multiplying row ii by xix_i. In the square case m=nm = n, the Vandermonde determinant is det⁡V=∏1≤i<j≤n(xj−xi)\det V = \prod_{1 \le i < j \le n} (x_j - x_i). For a polynomial p(t)=c0+c1t+⋯+cn−1tn−1p(t) = c_0 + c_1 t + \cdots + c_{n-1} t^{n-1}, the vector VcV c lists the values p(x1),…,p(xm)p(x_1), \dots, p(x_m). Some authors use the transpose of VV instead.
