Statement

Let Οƒ\sigma be an algebraic signature, and let 𝐀π₯𝐠(Οƒ)\mathbf{Alg}(\sigma) be the category of all Οƒ\sigma-algebras and their homomorphisms. Let 𝒱\mathcal{V} be a variety of Οƒ\sigma-algebras, viewed as a full subcategory. For a Οƒ\sigma-algebra AA, let ΞΈA\theta_A be the intersection of all congruences ΞΈ\theta of AA with A/ΞΈβˆˆπ’±A / \theta \in \mathcal{V}, and let qA ⁣:Aβ†’A/ΞΈAq_A \colon A \to A / \theta_A be the quotient map. Then A/ΞΈAβˆˆπ’±A / \theta_A \in \mathcal{V}, and for every Bβˆˆπ’±B \in \mathcal{V} and every homomorphism f ⁣:Aβ†’Bf \colon A \to B there is a unique homomorphism fˉ ⁣:A/ΞΈAβ†’B\bar f \colon A / \theta_A \to B with fΛ‰βˆ˜qA=f\bar f \circ q_A = f. Hence 𝒱\mathcal{V} is a reflective subcategory of 𝐀π₯𝐠(Οƒ)\mathbf{Alg}(\sigma), with reflection qAq_A, and its reflector A↦A/ΞΈAA \mapsto A / \theta_A is left adjoint to the inclusion.

Remarks

The algebra A/ΞΈAA / \theta_A embeds into the product of the algebras A/ΞΈA / \theta over all such ΞΈ\theta, so it lies in 𝒱\mathcal{V} by closure under subalgebras and products. For f ⁣:Aβ†’Bf \colon A \to B with Bβˆˆπ’±B \in \mathcal{V}, the image f(A)f(A) is a subalgebra of BB, so A/ker⁑fβ‰…f(A)βˆˆπ’±A / \ker f \cong f(A) \in \mathcal{V}. Thus ker⁑fβŠ‡ΞΈA\ker f \supseteq \theta_A, and ff factors through qAq_A; the factorization is unique because qAq_A is surjective.

Only closure under isomorphic copies, subalgebras and products is used, so the same holds for every quasivariety and every prevariety. Example: for the variety of abelian groups inside groups, ΞΈG\theta_G is the congruence of the commutator subgroup [G,G][G, G], and the reflection is the abelianization Gβ†’G/[G,G]G \to G / [G, G]. Applied to the absolutely free term algebra on a set XX, the reflection gives the free algebra of 𝒱\mathcal{V} on XX.

Going deeper

For a student

The reflection A↦A/ΞΈAA \mapsto A / \theta_A is a universal construction, and ΞΈA\theta_A is the congruence generated by the pairs (s(aΛ‰),t(aΛ‰))(s(\bar a), t(\bar a)) for identities sβ‰ˆts \approx t of 𝒱\mathcal{V} and tuples aΛ‰\bar a of AA. Since the reflector is a left adjoint, it preserves colimits: the free product in 𝒱\mathcal{V} of two members is the reflection of their free product in 𝐀π₯𝐠(Οƒ)\mathbf{Alg}(\sigma). Composing with the free functor of 𝐀π₯𝐠(Οƒ)\mathbf{Alg}(\sigma) recovers the free functor of 𝒱\mathcal{V}. Reflective subcategories are closed under limits, which matches the closure of varieties under products and under equalizers, which are subalgebras.
