Variety of algebras
Builds on Identity
Definition
Let be a signature of function symbols, and let be a set of identities in the language of . An algebra of signature satisfies if and take the same value in for every assignment of the variables. The class is the class of all algebras of signature that satisfy every identity in . A variety (or equational class) of signature is a class of algebras of signature with for some .
Remarks
Example: abelian groups, in the signature , form a variety. It is for the identities , , and . Non-example: fields do not form a variety of signature . Every variety is closed under direct products, but the product of two fields is not a field, since . By Birkhoff's theorem, a class is a variety if and only if it is closed under homomorphic images, subalgebras and direct products. Some authors write as .
