statement proposition

Vector triple product

Statement

Let aa, bb and cc be vectors in R3\mathbb{R}^3. Let ×\times be the cross product and let ⋅\cdot be the dot product. Then a×(b×c)=(a⋅c) b−(a⋅b) c.a \times (b \times c) = (a \cdot c) \, b - (a \cdot b) \, c.

Remarks

The formula is easy to remember as "BAC minus CAB": a×(b×c)=b(a⋅c)−c(a⋅b)a \times (b \times c) = b(a \cdot c) - c(a \cdot b). The cross product is not associative. The formula gives (a×b)×c=(a⋅c) b−(b⋅c) a(a \times b) \times c = (a \cdot c) \, b - (b \cdot c) \, a, which is in general different from a×(b×c)a \times (b \times c). A consequence is the Jacobi identity a×(b×c)+b×(c×a)+c×(a×b)=0a \times (b \times c) + b \times (c \times a) + c \times (a \times b) = 0.

Explanations

L1 human

The vector b×cb \times c is perpendicular to the plane of bb and cc. A second cross product with aa gives a vector perpendicular to b×cb \times c, so the result lies back in the plane of bb and cc. The formula tells you exactly which combination of bb and cc it is.

What this node needs for W1
  • an inventory row: the row of the inventory that the node accounts for (0 of 1)

The writing levels say how complete the text of a node is. They do not measure its truth.

What this needs

To read this node, read these 2 nodes in this order. The foundations come first, and the list ends with this node.

Each node uses the nodes above it. The colour of the bar on a box shows the evidence level, and the box also gives it as text. The list below has the same nodes.
