Definition
Let be a topological space, and let be the set of nonempty closed subsets of . For an open set , put The Vietoris topology on is the topology generated by the subbasis of all sets and with open in .
Remarks
The same subbasis, intersected with a smaller family, defines the Vietoris topology on that family, for example on the nonempty compact subsets . If is a metric space, the Vietoris topology on is the topology of the Hausdorff metric. If is compact Hausdorff, then with the Vietoris topology is compact Hausdorff. If is , the map is a topological embedding of into .
Example: let , let , and let . Each basic neighbourhood of has the form with and each open and nonempty. For large , the set meets each and lies in , so .
Non-example: the sets do not converge to , though they lie in every with . The open set gives a neighbourhood of that does not contain .
The resulting space is called a hyperspace of , and the topology is also called the finite topology or exponential topology.

What this page needs for W1
- an inventory row: the row of the inventory that the node accounts for (0 of 1)
- a source with a locator (0 of 1)
The writing levels say how complete the text of a page is. They do not measure its truth.
