Builds on Thermal radiationRadiosity
Definition
Let and be two surfaces in space, with areas also written and . For points and , let be the distance from to . Let and be the angles between the segment and the normals of the surfaces at and at . The integrand below is set to when the segment is blocked or when a surface faces away from the other point. The view factor from to is If emits and reflects diffusely with uniform radiosity, then is the fraction of the thermal radiation leaving that strikes directly.
Remarks
Reciprocity follows from the symmetry of the integrand. If form a closed enclosure, then for each , and when is plane or convex.
Example: a hemispherical shell of radius closed by its base disk . The disk sees only the shell, so . Reciprocity gives , and summation gives : the concave shell sees itself.
Non-example: if is a mirror, reflecting specularly, the reflected part of the radiation leaving is not distributed according to , since the diffuse assumption fails.
Other names are configuration factor, angle factor and shape factor.

What this page needs for W1
- an inventory row: the row of the inventory that the node accounts for (0 of 1)
- a source with a locator (0 of 1)
The writing levels say how complete the text of a page is. They do not measure its truth.
