Virial expansion
Summary
The virial expansion writes the equation of state of a gas as a power series in the density. Its coefficients depend only on the temperature. The first term gives the ideal gas, and the following terms are corrections from interactions between two, three and more molecules. The coefficients, called virial coefficients, can be measured and also computed from the intermolecular forces in statistical mechanics.
