Definition
Consider a fluid in thermodynamic equilibrium with pressure , absolute temperature and molar volume , the volume per mole. Let be the molar gas constant. The compressibility factor of the fluid in this state is
Remarks
For an ideal gas, the ideal gas law gives in every state. For a gas that obeys the van der Waals equation with constants , solving for gives so in general, and as . A non-example: the ratio with the total volume in place of is not . For moles it equals , because it does not use the volume per mole. The virial expansion writes . By the law of corresponding states, is approximately the same function of the reduced temperature and reduced pressure for many gases.
