Definition
Let be a ring with identity, not necessarily commutative. is von Neumann regular if for every there is with .
Remarks
If , then is an idempotent with ; so is von Neumann regular if and only if every principal right ideal is generated by an idempotent. A commutative ring is von Neumann regular if and only if it is reduced of Krull dimension , and if and only if every -module is flat. Every semisimple ring, for instance the ring of matrices over a division ring, is von Neumann regular.
Example: a Boolean ring , in which for all , is von Neumann regular with : . Example: a field is von Neumann regular, with for and for ; so is any product of fields, componentwise.
Non-example: is not von Neumann regular. For , the condition means , which has no solution in .
