Definition
Let be a metric space with its Borel σ-algebra. Let and be probability measures on . The sequence converges weakly to if for every bounded continuous function . The integrals are Lebesgue integrals.
Remarks
Common notations are and . Some authors call the same notion narrow convergence. Weak limits are unique on a metric space.
Example: let be the Dirac measure at on . Then converges weakly to . Indeed , and because is continuous.
Non-example: does not converge weakly to . Take , which is bounded and continuous. Then , but .
Random variables converge in distribution exactly when their laws converge weakly.
