Definition

Let RR be a ring with identity and let MM be a left RR-module. A flat resolution of length nn of MM is an exact sequence 0→Fn→Fn−1→⋯→F0→M→00 \to F_n \to F_{n-1} \to \cdots \to F_0 \to M \to 0 in which every FiF_i is a flat left RR-module. The weak dimension (or flat dimension) wd⁡(M)\operatorname{wd}(M) is the least n≥0n \ge 0 such that MM has a flat resolution of length nn. If there is no such nn, then wd⁡(M)=∞\operatorname{wd}(M) = \infty. The weak global dimension of RR is the supremum of wd⁡(M)\operatorname{wd}(M) over all left RR-modules MM.

Remarks

Equivalently, wd⁡(M)≤n\operatorname{wd}(M) \le n if and only if Tor⁡n+1R(N,M)=0\operatorname{Tor}^R_{n+1}(N, M) = 0 for every right RR-module NN, with Tor the derived functors of the tensor product. So the weak global dimension of RR is the supremum of the nn with Tor⁡nR(N,M)≠0\operatorname{Tor}^R_n(N, M) \ne 0 for some right module NN and left module MM. It is the same for left and right modules. Example: over R=ℤR = \Z, the module ℤ/2\Z/2 has weak dimension 11. The sequence 0→ℤ→2ℤ→ℤ/2→00 \to \Z \xrightarrow{2} \Z \to \Z/2 \to 0 is a flat resolution of length 11. The module ℤ/2\Z/2 is not flat, since tensoring the injective map ℤ→2ℤ\Z \xrightarrow{2} \Z with ℤ/2\Z/2 gives the zero map on ℤ/2\Z/2, which is not injective. Non-example of finite dimension: over R=ℤ/4R = \Z/4, the module ℤ/2\Z/2 has infinite weak dimension. Its resolution ⋯→ℤ/4→2ℤ/4→2ℤ/4→ℤ/2→0\cdots \to \Z/4 \xrightarrow{2} \Z/4 \xrightarrow{2} \Z/4 \to \Z/2 \to 0 gives Tor⁡nR(ℤ/2,ℤ/2)≅ℤ/2≠0\operatorname{Tor}^R_n(\Z/2, \Z/2) \cong \Z/2 \ne 0 for every n≥1n \ge 1. The weak dimension of a module is at most its projective dimension, so the weak global dimension is at most the left and the right global dimension. For a left Noetherian ring it equals the left global dimension. A ring has weak global dimension 00 if and only if it is von Neumann regular.

What this page needs for W1

  • an inventory row: the row of the inventory that the node accounts for (0 of 1)
  • a source with a locator (0 of 1)

The writing levels say how complete the text of a page is. They do not measure its truth.
