Statement

Let (A,π”ͺ)(A, \mathfrak m) be a complete Noetherian local ring, and let f=βˆ‘iβ‰₯0aiXif = \sum_{i \ge 0} a_i X^i be an element of the formal power series ring A[ ⁣[X] ⁣]A[\![X]\!]. Suppose that some coefficient aia_i does not lie in π”ͺ\mathfrak m, and let dd be the least such index. Then there are a unique unit uu of A[ ⁣[X] ⁣]A[\![X]\!] and a unique monic polynomial g=Xd+bdβˆ’1Xdβˆ’1+β‹―+b1X+b0,b0,…,bdβˆ’1∈π”ͺ,g = X^d + b_{d-1} X^{d-1} + \cdots + b_1 X + b_0, \qquad b_0, \dots, b_{d-1} \in \mathfrak m, such that f=ugf = u g.

Remarks

The proof goes through the Weierstrass division theorem. Under the same hypothesis, every h∈A[ ⁣[X] ⁣]h \in A[\![X]\!] can be written uniquely as h=qf+rh = q f + r with q∈A[ ⁣[X] ⁣]q \in A[\![X]\!] and rr a polynomial of degree less than dd. Dividing XdX^d by ff gives Xd=qf+rX^d = q f + r, and one checks that qq is a unit and g=Xdβˆ’rg = X^d - r has its lower coefficients in π”ͺ\mathfrak m. The division itself is built by successive approximation modulo powers of π”ͺ\mathfrak m, which converges because AA is complete. The hypothesis on the coefficients is needed. For A=k[ ⁣[Y] ⁣]A = k[\![Y]\!] and f=Yf = Y, every coefficient lies in π”ͺ=(Y)\mathfrak m = (Y), and ff is not of the form ugu g. Indeed, modulo π”ͺ\mathfrak m the product ugu g becomes uΛ‰Xdβ‰ 0\bar u X^d \neq 0, while ff becomes 00. Applied to A=k[ ⁣[X1,…,Xnβˆ’1] ⁣]A = k[\![X_1, \dots, X_{n-1}]\!], the theorem says that a power series in nn variables which is nonzero modulo (X1,…,Xnβˆ’1)(X_1, \dots, X_{n-1}) is, up to a unit, a polynomial in XnX_n. The original form of the theorem is analytic. Let ff be a holomorphic function near 0βˆˆβ„‚n0 \in \C^n such that zn↦f(0,…,0,zn)z_n \mapsto f(0, \dots, 0, z_n) has a zero of finite order dd at 00. Then the same factorization holds with convergent series. Here gg is a monic polynomial in znz_n whose lower coefficients are holomorphic in z1,…,znβˆ’1z_1, \dots, z_{n-1} and vanish at 00.

Going deeper

For a student

The theorem is the main tool to prove, by induction on nn, that k[ ⁣[X1,…,Xn] ⁣]k[\![X_1, \dots, X_n]\!] over a field kk is a Noetherian unique factorization domain. The same holds for the ring of convergent power series in nn complex variables. In number theory, for A=β„€pA = \Z_p, it shows that a power series in β„€p[ ⁣[X] ⁣]\Z_p[\![X]\!] not divisible by pp is a unit times a polynomial, which is used in Iwasawa theory.
