Definition

Let Φ\Phi be a root system in a Euclidean space EE with inner product (⋅,⋅)(\cdot, \cdot). For α∈Φ\alpha \in \Phi, let Hα={x∈E:(x,α)=0}H_\alpha = \set{x \in E : (x, \alpha) = 0}. A Weyl chamber of Φ\Phi is a connected component of the open set E∖⋃α∈ΦHαE \setminus \bigcup_{\alpha \in \Phi} H_\alpha.

Remarks

Each chamber is an open convex cone: for any γ\gamma in the chamber CC, it equals {x∈E:(x,α)(γ,α)>0 for all α∈Φ}\set{x \in E : (x, \alpha) (\gamma, \alpha) > 0 \text{ for all } \alpha \in \Phi}. Example: for A1={±α}A_1 = \set{\pm \alpha} in E=ℝE = \R, the only hyperplane is Hα={0}H_\alpha = \set{0}, and the chambers are (0,∞)(0, \infty) and (−∞,0)(-\infty, 0). Non-example: the closed half-line [0,∞)[0, \infty) is not a chamber, since it meets HαH_\alpha. For a base Δ\Delta of simple roots, the set {x∈E:(x,α)>0 for all α∈Δ}\set{x \in E : (x, \alpha) > 0 \text{ for all } \alpha \in \Delta} is a chamber, the fundamental chamber of Δ\Delta; this gives a bijection between bases and chambers. The Weyl group acts simply transitively on the set of chambers.

The writing levels say how complete the text of a page is. They do not measure its truth.
