Whitehead product
Definition
Let be a pointed space, and let . Give the CW structure with cells of dimensions , , and , so that its -skeleton is the wedge sum . Let be the attaching map of the top cell. For and , the Whitehead product is where is on and on , and are the homotopy groups.
Remarks
The class depends only on and . For , the map traces the boundary of the square in the torus, and is the commutator , up to the choice of conventions.
Example: let be the class of the identity. Then has Hopf invariant , so it is twice a generator, up to sign.
Non-example of a nonzero product: if is an H-space, for instance a topological group, then all Whitehead products in vanish. In particular, every Whitehead product in or is zero.
For the product is bilinear and satisfies , together with a graded Jacobi identity.
