Whitehead's lemmas

Builds on Lie algebra cohomologySemisimple Lie algebraRepresentation of a Lie algebra

Statement

Let ๐”ค\mathfrak{g} be a finite-dimensional semisimple Lie algebra over a field kk of characteristic 00. Let VV be a finite-dimensional representation of ๐”ค\mathfrak{g}, that is, a finite-dimensional ๐”ค\mathfrak{g}-module. Write Hn(๐”ค,V)H^n(\mathfrak{g}, V) for the nn-th Lie algebra cohomology group of ๐”ค\mathfrak{g} with coefficients in VV.

  1. (First Whitehead lemma) H1(๐”ค,V)=0H^1(\mathfrak{g}, V) = 0.
  2. (Second Whitehead lemma) H2(๐”ค,V)=0H^2(\mathfrak{g}, V) = 0.

Remarks

For an irreducible module VV on which ๐”ค\mathfrak{g} acts nontrivially, the Casimir element of VV acts on VV by a nonzero scalar. It also acts by zero on the cohomology, so all cohomology groups Hn(๐”ค,V)H^n(\mathfrak{g}, V) vanish. For the trivial module kk, one has H1(๐”ค,k)โ‰…(๐”ค/[๐”ค,๐”ค])โˆ—H^1(\mathfrak{g}, k) \cong (\mathfrak{g}/[\mathfrak{g}, \mathfrak{g}])^*, which is zero because ๐”ค=[๐”ค,๐”ค]\mathfrak{g} = [\mathfrak{g}, \mathfrak{g}]. The vanishing of H2(๐”ค,k)H^2(\mathfrak{g}, k) uses the nondegeneracy of the Killing form. A long exact sequence argument then passes from irreducible modules to all finite-dimensional modules.

The hypothesis of semisimplicity is necessary. For the one-dimensional abelian Lie algebra ๐”ค=k\mathfrak{g} = k and the trivial module kk, every linear form on ๐”ค\mathfrak{g} is a 11-cocycle and the only coboundary is 00, so H1(๐”ค,k)โ‰…kโ‰ 0H^1(\mathfrak{g}, k) \cong k \neq 0. The lemmas do not extend to H3H^3: for a simple Lie algebra ๐”ค\mathfrak{g}, the 33-form (x,y,z)โ†ฆฮบ([x,y],z)(x, y, z) \mapsto \kappa([x, y], z) built from the Killing form ฮบ\kappa gives a nonzero class in H3(๐”ค,k)H^3(\mathfrak{g}, k).

Going deeper

For a student

The first lemma gives a quick proof of Weyl's theorem on complete reducibility. A submodule WโІVW \subseteq V gives an extension of ๐”ค\mathfrak{g}-modules, and the obstruction to a complement lies in H1(๐”ค,Homโก(V/W,W))H^1(\mathfrak{g}, \Hom(V/W, W)), which is zero. The second lemma is the key step in the proof of the Levi decomposition. An abelian extension of a semisimple Lie algebra is classified by H2H^2, so it splits, and induction on the radical gives a semisimple complement.
