Winding number
Definition
Let be a closed path that is continuous and piecewise continuously differentiable. Let be a point that is not on the image of . The winding number of around is where the integral is a contour integral.
Remarks
The number is an integer. It counts how many times goes around counterclockwise, minus the times it goes around clockwise. As a function of , it is constant on each connected component of the complement of the image of . It is on the unbounded component. For the circle , traveled once counterclockwise, for and for , by the integral of 1/(z - w).
Explanations
L1 human
Stand at the point and watch a point that moves along the closed curve. The winding number is the number of full turns that you make. A circle around you gives , the same circle traveled twice gives , and a circle that does not go around you gives .
What this node needs for W2
- edge instance_of in: one example (0 of 1)
- edge not_instance_of in: one non-example that fails one clause (0 of 1)
The writing levels say how complete the text of a node is. They do not measure its truth.
