Yamabe flow
Builds on Riemannian metricScalar curvature
Definition
Let be a smooth manifold and let . Let be a smooth family of Riemannian metrics on . It solves the Yamabe flow if where is the scalar curvature of .
Let be compact. The normalized Yamabe flow is where is the average of over with respect to the volume of . It preserves the total volume.
Remarks
Example: on the unit sphere with and round metric , put . The scalar curvature of is , so that of is . The equation becomes , which holds for with . Non-example: the family on the flat torus fails, since the scalar curvature is but the metric changes. The right side is a multiple of . So a solution has the form for a positive function on , and it stays in the conformal class of . In dimension the Ricci curvature equals , so the Yamabe flow coincides with the Ricci flow .
