Definition

Let (M,g)(M, g) be an oriented pseudo-Riemannian manifold with Hodge star ⋆\star. Let GG be a compact Lie group with Lie algebra 𝔤\mathfrak{g}, and fix an inner product ⟨⋅,⋅⟩\ip{\cdot}{\cdot} on 𝔤\mathfrak{g} invariant under the adjoint action. Let P→MP \to M be a principal GG-bundle. For a connection AA on PP, let FAF_A be its curvature, a 22-form with values in the adjoint bundle P×G𝔤P \times_G \mathfrak{g}. Let gYM>0g_{\mathrm{YM}} > 0 be a constant, the coupling constant. Pure Yang–Mills theory with gauge group GG is the following gauge theory. Its fields are the connections on PP, and its action is S(A)=−12gYM2∫M⟨FA,∧⋆FA⟩.S(A) = -\frac{1}{2 g_{\mathrm{YM}}^2} \int_M \ip{F_A}{\wedge \star F_A}. Here ⟨FA,∧⋆FA⟩\ip{F_A}{\wedge \star F_A} combines the wedge product of forms with the inner product on 𝔤\mathfrak{g}. Its field equations are the Yang–Mills equations dA⋆FA=0d_A \star F_A = 0.

Remarks

In Riemannian (Euclidean) signature one uses instead SE(A)=12gYM2∫M∣FA∣2 volgS_E(A) = \frac{1}{2 g_{\mathrm{YM}}^2} \int_M \abs{F_A}^2 \, \mathrm{vol}_g, the Yang–Mills functional. Sign conventions for the Lorentzian action differ between books; the field equations do not depend on them. A Yang–Mills theory with matter adds terms for fields in associated bundles, as in quantum chromodynamics.

Example: G=U(1)G = U(1) with 𝔤=iℝ\mathfrak{g} = i\R. Then FA=dAF_A = dA is a closed form, dA=dd_A = d on forms with values in 𝔤\mathfrak{g}, and the Yang–Mills equations become d⋆F=0d \star F = 0, Maxwell's equations in vacuum. For a non-abelian GG the curvature in a local trivialization is F=dA+12[A∧A]F = dA + \frac{1}{2}[A \wedge A], and the quadratic term makes the equations nonlinear.

Non-example: on a 33-manifold, take the Chern–Simons action, which up to a constant factor is ∫M⟨A,∧dA⟩+13⟨A,∧[A∧A]⟩\int_M \ip{A}{\wedge dA} + \frac{1}{3} \ip{A}{\wedge [A \wedge A]}. It is built from AA itself and not from ∣FA∣2\abs{F_A}^2, so it does not define a Yang–Mills theory. Its field equations say that AA is flat.

In physics notation, with 𝔤\mathfrak{g} realized by Hermitian matrices and tr(TaTb)=12δab\mathrm{tr}(T^a T^b) = \frac{1}{2}\delta^{ab}, the Lorentzian Lagrangian density is −12tr(FμνFμν)=−14FμνaFa μν-\frac{1}{2}\mathrm{tr}(F_{\mu\nu} F^{\mu\nu}) = -\frac{1}{4} F^a_{\mu\nu} F^{a\,\mu\nu} after rescaling AA by the coupling.
