statement theorem

Young's inequality for products

Statement

Let p,q>1p, q > 1 be real numbers with 1p+1q=1\frac{1}{p} + \frac{1}{q} = 1. Then for all real a,b≥0a, b \ge 0, ab≤app+bqq.a b \le \frac{a^p}{p} + \frac{b^q}{q}. Equality holds if and only if ap=bqa^p = b^q.

Remarks

It is the weighted AM–GM inequality for the numbers apa^p and bqb^q, with weights 1/p1/p and 1/q1/q. For p=q=2p = q = 2 it is ab≤(a2+b2)/2a b \le (a^2 + b^2)/2. It is the main step in the proof of Hölder's inequality. Mathlib states it as Real.young_inequality.

Explanations

L1 human

Young's inequality bounds a product by a sum of powers. It splits the product in a way that depends on the pair of exponents pp and qq.

What this node needs for W2
  • edge about out: the concepts that the statement is about (0 of 1)
  • edge proves in: at least one proof node (0 of 1)
  • edge instance_of or illustrates in: one example that shows the statement at work (0 of 1)
  • explanation L2 (0 of 1)

The writing levels say how complete the text of a node is. They do not measure its truth.

What this needs

To read this node, read these 2 nodes in this order. The foundations come first, and the list ends with this node.

Each node uses the nodes above it. The colour of the bar on a box shows the evidence level, and the box also gives it as text. The list below has the same nodes.

  2. Young's inequality for products statement

What depends on this
