Problem
Let be positive integers with and . Call an matrix with entries in -free if no rows and columns cross only in entries equal to . Let be the largest number of entries equal to in an -free matrix. Determine , or its order of growth.
Remarks
Equivalently, consider bipartite graphs with parts and of sizes and . Then is the largest number of edges of such a graph with no complete bipartite subgraph that has vertices in and in . It is closely tied to the extremal number .
The Kővári–Sós–Turán theorem gives the upper bound for fixed . For the order is correct. If is a prime power and , then , and the incidence matrix of a finite projective plane of order attains this value. The order is also known to be correct for and, for , when is large enough compared with , by algebraic constructions called norm graphs. In general the problem is open; for example, the order of growth of is not known.

What this page needs for W1
- an inventory row: the row of the inventory that the node accounts for (0 of 1)
- a source with a locator (0 of 1)
The writing levels say how complete the text of a page is. They do not measure its truth.
