statement axiom

Zero is not a successor

Statement

Let S ⁣:N→NS \colon \mathbb{N} \to \mathbb{N} be the successor function of the natural numbers. For each natural number nn, S(n)≠0S(n) \neq 0.

Remarks

This is one of the Peano axioms. In a construction of N\mathbb{N}, it is a theorem. With the injectivity of the successor function, it shows that the numbers 0,S(0),S(S(0)),…0, S(0), S(S(0)), \dots are all different.

Explanations

L1 human

When you count up from any natural number, you never get back to 00. Thus the natural numbers do not go around in a circle, like the hours on a clock do.

What this node needs for W1
  • an inventory row: the row of the inventory that the node accounts for (0 of 1)

The writing levels say how complete the text of a node is. They do not measure its truth.

What this needs

To read this node, read these 4 nodes in this order. The foundations come first, and the list ends with this node.

Each node uses the nodes above it. The colour of the bar on a box shows the evidence level, and the box also gives it as text. The list below has the same nodes.
  • no evidence level
  1. Natural numbers object
  2. Peano axioms concept
  3. Successor function definition
  4. Zero is not a successor statement
