Zeta function regularization
Definition
Let be a sequence of real numbers such that:
- and ;
- the series converges for all complex with , for some real ;
- has a meromorphic analytic continuation to a domain that contains and .
If the continuation is holomorphic at , the zeta-regularized sum of is . If it is holomorphic at , the zeta-regularized product of is .
Remarks
Here , which needs . The function is a generalized Dirichlet series.
Example: for one has for , and the right side is meromorphic on . So the regularized sum of is . For , is the Riemann zeta function, so the regularized sum of is , and the regularized product is .
Non-example: the sequence fails clause 1, since it has negative terms and is not defined by a real logarithm.
