Definition
A -manifold is a topological manifold of dimension , that is, a topological space such that:
- is Hausdorff,
- is second countable, and
- every point of has an open neighborhood homeomorphic to an open subset of .
A smooth -manifold is a -manifold with a smooth structure.
Remarks
Example: the -sphere is Hausdorff and second countable as a subspace of , and stereographic projection from a point maps homeomorphically onto , which gives clause 3.
Non-example: take two copies of and glue them along the complement of the origin. Every point has a neighborhood homeomorphic to , but the two origins have no disjoint neighborhoods, so clause 1 fails.
By invariance of domain, no nonempty open subset of is homeomorphic to an open subset of with , so the dimension is well defined. The manifold is a closed -manifold with no smooth structure.
