Definition

Let KK be an algebraic number field. For each place vv of KK, let KvK_v be the completion of KK at vv. For each finite place vv, let 𝒪v={x∈Kv:∣x∣v≤1}\mathcal{O}_v = \set{x \in K_v : \abs{x}_v \le 1} be its valuation ring. The adele ring of KK is 𝔸K={(xv)v∈∏vKv:xv∈𝒪v for all but finitely many finite v},\mathbb{A}_K = \Big\{ (x_v)_v \in \prod_v K_v : x_v \in \mathcal{O}_v \text{ for all but finitely many finite } v \Big\}, with componentwise addition and multiplication, so it is a ring. Its topology is the restricted product topology. A basis of open sets is formed by the sets ∏v∈SUv×∏v∉S𝒪v\prod_{v \in S} U_v \times \prod_{v \notin S} \mathcal{O}_v. Here SS is a finite set of places containing all infinite places, and each Uv⊆KvU_v \subseteq K_v is open.

Remarks

With this topology, 𝔸K\mathbb{A}_K is a locally compact topological ring. The topology is finer than the one induced by the product topology on ∏vKv\prod_v K_v. The diagonal map K→𝔸KK \to \mathbb{A}_K, x↦(x)vx \mapsto (x)_v, is well defined because an element of KK lies in 𝒪v\mathcal{O}_v for all but finitely many vv; its image is discrete and 𝔸K/K\mathbb{A}_K / K is compact.

Example: for K=ℚK = \Q, the places are ∞\infty and the primes pp, with ℚ∞=ℝ\Q_\infty = \R, ℚp\Q_p the p-adic numbers and 𝒪p=ℤp\mathcal{O}_p = \Z_p the p-adic integers. The family x=(xv)x = (x_v) with x∞=πx_\infty = \pi, x2=1/2x_2 = 1/2 and xp=1x_p = 1 for p≥3p \ge 3 is an adele, since only one pp-adic entry lies outside ℤp\Z_p.

Non-example: the family with x∞=0x_\infty = 0 and xp=1/px_p = 1/p for every prime pp lies in ∏vℚv\prod_v \Q_v but not in 𝔸ℚ\mathbb{A}_{\Q}, since 1/p∉ℤp1/p \notin \Z_p for infinitely many pp.
