Adjoint functors
Definition
Let and be categories, and let and be functors. An adjunction between and is a family of bijections one for each object of and each object of . The family must be natural in and in . Naturality means . This must hold for all , and . If an adjunction exists, is left adjoint to and is right adjoint to , written .
Remarks
Equivalently, is a natural isomorphism between the two hom functors and from to sets.
Example: let send a set to the free group , and let send a group to its underlying set. A homomorphism is determined by its values on the generators, and these values can be any elements of . So is a bijection, and it is natural in and .
Non-example: the forgetful functor from groups to sets has no right adjoint. Indeed, a left adjoint preserves colimits, hence the initial object. But sends the trivial group, which is initial, to a one-point set, which is not initial in sets.
Another standard example is in sets, where is the set of maps .
