Definition
Let be a field that contains the field of rational numbers. Then is an algebraic number field (or number field) if it has finite dimension as a vector space over . This dimension is the degree of the field extension , also called the degree of .
Remarks
Example: , a subfield of . It contains , and is a basis over , so and is a number field. Non-example: contains , but it is not of finite dimension over , since a finite-dimensional space over is countable and is not. Another non-example: the field of all algebraic numbers is an algebraic extension of of infinite degree. Every element of a number field is an algebraic number, and by the primitive element theorem every number field is for one algebraic number . The elements of that are roots of a monic polynomial with integer coefficients form a subring , the ring of integers of .
