Alternative algebra
Builds on Nonassociative algebraAssociator
Definition
Let be a nonassociative algebra over a commutative ring . is alternative if for all :
- (left alternative law).
- (right alternative law).
Remarks
In terms of the associator, the laws say and . Replacing by gives and . So the associator is alternating: it changes sign under any swap of two arguments and vanishes when two arguments are equal. In particular , so an alternative algebra is flexible. Example: every associative algebra is alternative, and so are the octonions. Non-example: with the cross product is not alternative, since but .
