Statement

Let GG be a locally compact abelian group and let G^\widehat{G} be its Pontryagin dual. Identify GG with the dual of G^\widehat{G} by the Pontryagin duality theorem. For a closed subgroup HH of GG, its annihilator is H⊥={χ∈G^:χ(h)=1 for all h∈H}.H^\perp = \set{\chi \in \widehat{G} : \chi(h) = 1 \text{ for all } h \in H}. Then the following hold.

  1. H⊥H^\perp is a closed subgroup of G^\widehat{G}, and (H⊥)⊥=H(H^\perp)^\perp = H.
  2. The map that sends χ∈H⊥\chi \in H^\perp to the character xH↦χ(x)xH \mapsto \chi(x) of the quotient group G/HG/H is an isomorphism of topological groups H⊥→G/H^H^\perp \to \widehat{G/H}.
  3. Restriction χ↦χ∣H\chi \mapsto \chi|_H induces an isomorphism of topological groups G^/H⊥→H^\widehat{G}/H^\perp \to \widehat{H}.
  4. The map H↦H⊥H \mapsto H^\perp is an inclusion-reversing bijection from the closed subgroups of GG onto the closed subgroups of G^\widehat{G}.

Remarks

Proof idea: a continuous character of G/HG/H composed with the quotient map is a character of GG trivial on HH, and every such character arises this way, which gives 2. The inclusion H⊆(H⊥)⊥H \subseteq (H^\perp)^\perp is clear. For the reverse, if x∉Hx \notin H, then xHxH is not the identity of the locally compact abelian group G/HG/H, and the characters of G/HG/H separate points, so some χ∈H⊥\chi \in H^\perp has χ(x)≠1\chi(x) \ne 1. Statement 3 follows from 2 applied to the subgroup H⊥H^\perp of G^\widehat{G}, together with duality.

Example: let G=ℝG = \R with characters χξ(x)=e2πiξx\chi_\xi(x) = e^{2\pi i \xi x}, and let H=ℤH = \Z. Then χξ\chi_\xi is trivial on ℤ\Z exactly when ξ∈ℤ\xi \in \Z, so H⊥≅ℤH^\perp \cong \Z, which is the dual of the circle ℝ/ℤ\R/\Z. Also ℝ^/H⊥≅ℝ/ℤ\widehat{\R}/H^\perp \cong \R/\Z, which is the dual of ℤ\Z.

The subgroup must be closed. For the dense subgroup ℚ\Q of ℝ\R, a continuous character trivial on ℚ\Q is trivial on ℝ\R, so ℚ⊥\Q^\perp is trivial and (ℚ⊥)⊥=ℝ≠ℚ(\Q^\perp)^\perp = \R \ne \Q.

For a student

Annihilator duality is the group form of the duality between subspaces and their annihilators in linear algebra. It is used to compute duals of quotients and subgroups, for example ℝ/ℤ^=ℤ\widehat{\R/\Z} = \Z from ℤ⊥\Z^\perp in ℝ^\widehat{\R}. It is the setting of the Poisson summation formula, where a sum over HH equals a sum over H⊥H^\perp. It also shows that a closed subgroup HH is determined by the characters that are trivial on it. This makes it a tool in the structure theory of locally compact abelian groups.
