Poisson summation formula for abelian groups

Statement

Let GG be a locally compact abelian group, let HH be a closed subgroup, and let H⊥⊆G^H^\perp \subseteq \widehat{G} be its annihilator in the Pontryagin dual. Choose Haar measures on GG, HH and the quotient group G/HG/H related by Weil's quotient integral formula. Give H⊥≅G/H^H^\perp \cong \widehat{G/H} the Haar measure dual to the one on G/HG/H. Let f∈L1(G)f \in L^1(G) be continuous, with Fourier transform f^\widehat{f}, and assume:

  1. for each x∈Gx \in G, the function h↦f(x+h)h \mapsto f(x + h) is integrable on HH, and x+H↦∫Hf(x+h) dhx + H \mapsto \int_H f(x + h)\, dh is continuous on G/HG/H;
  2. the restriction of f^\widehat{f} to H⊥H^\perp is integrable on H⊥H^\perp.

Then ∫Hf(h) dh=∫H⊥f^(χ) dχ.\int_H f(h) \, dh = \int_{H^\perp} \widehat{f}(\chi) \, d\chi.

Remarks

Proof idea: let F(x+H)=∫Hf(x+h) dhF(x + H) = \int_H f(x + h)\, dh. By Weil's formula FF is integrable on G/HG/H, and its Fourier transform at χ∈H⊥=G/H^\chi \in H^\perp = \widehat{G/H} is f^(χ)\widehat{f}(\chi). Since FF is continuous and F^\widehat{F} is integrable, Fourier inversion holds at every point, and the point 0+H0 + H gives the formula.

Example: G=ℝG = \R with Lebesgue measure, H=ℤH = \Z with counting measure, and χξ(x)=e2πiξx\chi_\xi(x) = e^{2\pi i \xi x}. Then G/HG/H is the circle of length 11, H⊥={χk:k∈ℤ}H^\perp = \set{\chi_k : k \in \Z} carries counting measure, and the formula is the classical Poisson summation formula ∑nf(n)=∑kf^(k)\sum_{n} f(n) = \sum_{k} \widehat{f}(k). For G=ℤ/NℤG = \Z/N\Z and HH the subgroup of multiples of dd, where dd divides NN, it is an identity between two finite sums.

Some hypotheses of this kind are needed. For a continuous integrable ff on ℝ\R alone, the series ∑kf^(k)\sum_k \widehat{f}(k) need not converge, and then the right side has no meaning.

For a student

The abstract form explains where the classical formula comes from: periodising ff over HH gives a function on G/HG/H, whose Fourier coefficients are the values of f^\widehat{f} on H⊥H^\perp. With G=ℝnG = \R^n and HH a lattice, H⊥H^\perp is the dual lattice, which gives the theta function identities and the functional equation of the Riemann zeta function. With GG the adeles of a number field and HH the field itself, the same formula is the starting point of Tate's thesis.
