ANNNI model
Builds on Ising model
Example
Let be a finite box of and pick one coordinate axis, the axial direction. Let and be constants and let be the inverse temperature. A configuration is , and denotes the unit vector of the axial direction. Its energy is where the first sum runs over nearest-neighbour pairs with orthogonal to . The ANNNI model (axial next-nearest-neighbour Ising model) is the probability measure on proportional to .
Remarks
The nearest-neighbour terms favour alignment, while the next-nearest-neighbour axial term with favours opposite spins at distance two, so the interactions compete. At zero temperature, along one axial chain the ferromagnetic pattern has energy per site and the pattern has energy per site. So the ground state is ferromagnetic when and of type when . At positive temperature the model shows many modulated phases with different periods along the axis. For it is an anisotropic Ising model with couplings and .

What this page needs for W1
- an inventory row: the row of the inventory that the node accounts for (0 of 1)
- a source with a locator (0 of 1)
The writing levels say how complete the text of a page is. They do not measure its truth.
