Approximation property
Definition
Let be a Banach space over or . A continuous linear map has finite rank if its image is finite-dimensional. The space has the approximation property if the following holds. For every compact set and every there is a continuous linear map of finite rank such that for all .
Remarks
Example: let have a Schauder basis , and let be the projection . Each is continuous (a theorem of Banach) and has finite rank, for every , and by the uniform boundedness principle. Pointwise convergence of a uniformly bounded sequence of operators is uniform on compact sets, so the witness the approximation property. In particular for and have it. Every Hilbert space has it too, using orthogonal projections onto finite-dimensional subspaces, even when it has no countable basis. Non-example: the space built in Enflo's counterexample fails the definition for some compact set and some . Grothendieck's equivalent form: has the approximation property if and only if for every Banach space , every compact operator is a norm limit of finite-rank operators.
