Statement

Let XX be a Banach space and let YY be a normed vector space, both over ℝ\R or ℂ\C. Let ℱ\mathcal{F} be a family of continuous linear maps from XX to YY. If sup⁡T∈ℱ∥Tx∥<∞\sup_{T \in \mathcal{F}} \norm{Tx} < \infty for every x∈Xx \in X, then sup⁡T∈ℱ∥T∥<∞\sup_{T \in \mathcal{F}} \norm{T} < \infty, where ∥T∥\norm{T} is the operator norm.

Remarks

For k≥1k \ge 1 let Fk={x∈X:∥Tx∥≤k for all T∈ℱ}F_k = \set{x \in X : \norm{Tx} \le k \text{ for all } T \in \mathcal{F}}. Each FkF_k is closed, and the hypothesis says that the FkF_k cover XX. Since XX is complete, the Baire category theorem gives some FkF_k that contains a ball B(x0,r)B(x_0, r). Then for ∥x∥<r\norm{x} < r and T∈ℱT \in \mathcal{F}, ∥Tx∥≤∥T(x0+x)∥+∥Tx0∥≤2k\norm{Tx} \le \norm{T(x_0 + x)} + \norm{T x_0} \le 2k, so ∥T∥≤2k/r\norm{T} \le 2k/r.

A main use is the Banach–Steinhaus theorem: if continuous linear maps Tn ⁣:X→YT_n \colon X \to Y converge at every point to TxTx, then TT is linear and continuous, since ∥Tx∥≤sup⁡n∥Tn∥ ∥x∥\norm{Tx} \le \sup_n \norm{T_n}\,\norm{x}. Completeness of XX is necessary. Let XX be the space of finitely supported real sequences with the norm ∥x∥∞=sup⁡k∣xk∣\norm{x}_\infty = \sup_k \abs{x_k}, and let Tn(x)=nxnT_n(x) = n x_n. For each xx the values TnxT_n x are eventually 00, so they are bounded, but ∥Tn∥=n\norm{T_n} = n.

Going deeper

For a student

It is one of three consequences of the Baire category theorem at the core of a first course on Banach spaces. The other two are the bounded inverse theorem and the closed graph theorem. A classical application shows that there is a continuous periodic function whose Fourier series diverges at a point: the partial-sum functionals at that point have unbounded norms. It also shows that weakly convergent sequences in a normed space are bounded, by applying it to the sequence viewed in the bidual.
