Statement
Let and be Banach spaces over or . Let be a continuous linear map that is bijective. Then the inverse is continuous, that is, there is a constant with for all .
Remarks
The theorem follows from the open mapping theorem: a surjective continuous linear map between Banach spaces sends open sets to open sets. That theorem is proved with the Baire category theorem applied to the cover . For a bijection, openness of is exactly continuity of .
A common application: if a vector space is complete for two norms and with , then the two norms are equivalent. Indeed, the identity map is a continuous bijection from the first norm to the second. Completeness of is necessary. On the identity map from to is a continuous linear bijection, because . Its inverse is not bounded: has and . Here is not complete.

For a student
The theorem is used to prove stability of solutions: if an equation has exactly one solution for each , the solution depends continuously on . It is equivalent, by short arguments, to the open mapping theorem and to the closed graph theorem. Together with the uniform boundedness principle these results all rest on the Baire category theorem.

What this page needs for W1
- an inventory row: the row of the inventory that the node accounts for (0 of 1)
- a source with a locator (0 of 1)
The writing levels say how complete the text of a page is. They do not measure its truth.
