Statement
Let and be Banach spaces over or , and let be a linear map. Give the norm . Then is continuous if and only if its graph is closed in .
Remarks
If is continuous, its graph is closed because is Hausdorff. Conversely, if is closed, it is a Banach space, and the projection is a continuous linear bijection from onto . The bounded inverse theorem makes its inverse continuous, and so is continuous.
In practice the closed graph condition is easier to check: it says that if and , then . One does not have to show that converges. Completeness is necessary. Let and , both with the sup norm, and let . If and uniformly, then is differentiable with , so the graph is closed. But is not continuous, since has and ; here is not complete.

For a student
The theorem is used to prove automatic continuity: for example, a linear map defined on a whole Hilbert space with for all is bounded (Hellinger–Toeplitz theorem). It is also used to show that a projection onto a closed subspace along a closed complement is bounded, see complemented subspace. Unbounded operators in quantum mechanics are typically closed operators defined only on dense subspaces, which is consistent with the theorem.
