Statement

Let HH be a Hilbert space over ℝ\R or ℂ\C with inner product ⟨⋅,⋅⟩\ip{\cdot}{\cdot}. Let A ⁣:H→HA \colon H \to H be a linear map defined on all of HH. Assume that ⟨Ax,y⟩=⟨x,Ay⟩for all x,y∈H.\ip{Ax}{y} = \ip{x}{Ay} \qquad \text{for all } x, y \in H. Then AA is bounded, that is, AA is a continuous linear map.

Remarks

Proof idea: by the closed graph theorem, it suffices to show that AA is closed. If xn→xx_n \to x and Axn→zA x_n \to z, then for every y∈Hy \in H, ⟨z,y⟩=lim⁡⟨Axn,y⟩=lim⁡⟨xn,Ay⟩=⟨x,Ay⟩=⟨Ax,y⟩,\ip{z}{y} = \lim \ip{A x_n}{y} = \lim \ip{x_n}{Ay} = \ip{x}{Ay} = \ip{Ax}{y}, so z=Axz = Ax.

Example: if AA is given on ℓ2\ell^2 by a real symmetric infinite matrix and is defined on all of ℓ2\ell^2, the theorem says AA is automatically bounded.

Completeness of HH is needed. On the space of finitely supported sequences with the ℓ2\ell^2 inner product, the diagonal map (xn)↦(nxn)(x_n) \mapsto (n x_n) is defined everywhere and symmetric. It is unbounded, since it sends the nn-th unit vector to nn times itself.

Going deeper

For a student

The theorem is a short application of the closed graph theorem, and it is one reason why the theory of unbounded self-adjoint operators works with dense, proper domains. It also shows that a bounded operator is self-adjoint exactly when it is symmetric on all of HH; no extra boundedness hypothesis is needed. A related form: a linear map A ⁣:H→HA \colon H \to H that has a formal adjoint B ⁣:H→HB \colon H \to H, with ⟨Ax,y⟩=⟨x,By⟩\ip{Ax}{y} = \ip{x}{By} for all x,yx, y, is bounded, by the same proof.

What this page needs for W1

  • an inventory row: the row of the inventory that the node accounts for (0 of 1)
  • a source with a locator (0 of 1)

The writing levels say how complete the text of a page is. They do not measure its truth.
