Definition

Let GG be a topological group and let π ⁣:P→B\pi \colon P \to B be a principal GG-bundle, with GG acting on PP from the right. Let FF be a topological space with a continuous left action of GG. On P×FP \times F, with the product topology, let GG act by g⋅(p,f)=(pg−1,gf)g \cdot (p, f) = (p g^{-1}, g f). The associated bundle with fiber FF is the quotient space P×GF=(P×F)/G,P \times_G F = (P \times F) / G, together with the map πF ⁣:P×GF→B\pi_F \colon P \times_G F \to B, πF([p,f])=π(p)\pi_F([p, f]) = \pi(p).

Remarks

The map πF\pi_F is well defined because π(pg−1)=π(p)\pi(p g^{-1}) = \pi(p). It is a fiber bundle with fiber FF: a local trivialization π−1(U)≅U×G\pi^{-1}(U) \cong U \times G of PP induces πF−1(U)≅U×F\pi_F^{-1}(U) \cong U \times F. The class [p,f][p, f] is also written p×Gfp \times_G f; in it, [pg,f]=[p,gf][p g, f] = [p, g f].

Example: let G=ℤ/2ℤG = \Z/2\Z and P=S1→S1P = S^1 \to S^1, z↦z2z \mapsto z^2, a principal GG-bundle where the generator acts by z↦−zz \mapsto -z. Let the generator act on F=ℝF = \R by t↦−tt \mapsto -t. Then P×GℝP \times_G \R is the quotient of S1×ℝS^1 \times \R by (z,t)∼(−z,−t)(z, t) \sim (-z, -t), which is the open Möbius band, a nontrivial line bundle over the circle.

Non-example: the product P×FP \times F itself, with the map (p,f)↦π(p)(p, f) \mapsto \pi(p), is not the associated bundle when GG is nontrivial. Its fibers are copies of G×FG \times F, not of FF, because the quotient by GG was not taken.

If F=ℝnF = \R^n with G=GLn(ℝ)G = GL_n(\R) acting linearly, then P×GℝnP \times_G \R^n is a real vector bundle of rank nn.
