Definition
Let be a commutative ring. Let be a ring whose additive group carries a -module structure. Then is an associative algebra over , or -algebra, if for all and .
Remarks
Equivalently, a -algebra is a ring with a ring homomorphism whose image lies in the center of ; the scalar product is then . Example: for a field , the matrix ring is an -algebra with the entrywise scalar product. The check: , and all have entry , because commutes with the entries. Non-example: the quaternions with left multiplication by elements of are not a -algebra. The condition fails for the scalar with and , since while . They are an algebra over , because real numbers commute with all quaternions. Every ring is a -algebra in exactly one way. Some authors do not require a unit element in ; this note assumes one.
