Builds on Local ringNoetherian ringFinitely generated moduleProjective dimensionDepth
Statement
Let be a commutative Noetherian local ring. Let be a nonzero finitely generated -module of finite projective dimension. Then where is the depth with respect to .
Remarks
One proof goes by induction on , using a minimal free resolution of . When the depths are positive, one divides by an element of that is a non-zero-divisor on both and . Example: for , which has depth , the residue field has projective dimension and depth , and has projective dimension and depth . The hypothesis is needed: for and , the depths are and , but . In particular, a finitely generated module of finite projective dimension has projective dimension at most .

For a student
The formula is the main link between resolutions and regular sequences. Over a regular local ring, every finitely generated module has finite projective dimension, so the formula always applies there. It shows that a module of finite projective dimension over a Cohen–Macaulay local ring is maximal Cohen–Macaulay exactly when it is free.
