Statement
Let be a Noetherian scheme and let be a morphism. For a sheaf on , is the higher direct image, the sheaf on associated to , where is sheaf cohomology. For with residue field , let be the fiber and the restriction of to .
- (Flat base change.) Let be separated and of finite type, let be quasi-coherent, and let be a flat morphism with Noetherian. Let and be the projections. Then the natural maps are isomorphisms for all .
In the following, let be projective and let be a coherent sheaf on that is flat over .
- (Semicontinuity.) For each , the function is upper semicontinuous on , and the Euler characteristic is locally constant.
- (Grauert.) If is integral and is constant, then is locally free and the natural map is an isomorphism for every .
- (Cohomology and base change.) Let and suppose that the natural map is surjective. Then is an isomorphism, and is surjective if and only if is locally free in a neighbourhood of .
Remarks
The idea of the proof of parts 2 to 4: locally on an affine , there is a bounded complex of finitely generated free -modules with a special property. For every -algebra , it computes the cohomology after base change: . All statements then become facts about ranks of matrices of functions on . Part 1 follows from the Čech complex of an affine cover, since flat base change commutes with taking cohomology of a complex.
Example: let be a flat projective family of curves over an integral base, with all fibers smooth of genus . Then and for all , so by part 3 and are locally free of ranks and .
Flatness is needed in part 2. Let , and let be the disjoint union of and the closed point . Let be the identity on and the inclusion on the point, and let . Then is finite, hence projective, but is not flat over . The Euler characteristic of the fibers is at and elsewhere, so it is not locally constant.

For a student
The base change theorems are used to construct vector bundles on parameter spaces, such as the Hodge bundle on a moduli space of curves. Semicontinuity says that a property like is open in families, which is the starting point of deformation arguments. Flat base change lets one compute higher direct images after a flat change of base, for example after passing to a completion or to an étale neighbourhood.
