Residue field of a point

Summary

The residue field κ(x)\kappa(x) of a point xx of a scheme is the residue field of the local ring of the scheme at xx. It is the field in which functions near xx take their "value at xx". Different points of one scheme can have residue fields of different characteristics, as for Spec⁡ℤ\operatorname{Spec} \Z.
