Fiber of a morphism

Builds on Morphism of schemesFiber product of schemesResidue field of a point

Definition

Let f ⁣:X→Yf \colon X \to Y be a morphism of schemes and let y∈Yy \in Y. Let κ(y)\kappa(y) be the residue field of YY at yy. Let ιy ⁣:Spec⁡κ(y)→Y\iota_y \colon \operatorname{Spec} \kappa(y) \to Y be the canonical morphism with image yy. The fiber of ff over yy is the fiber product Xy=X×YSpec⁡κ(y),X_y = X \times_Y \operatorname{Spec} \kappa(y), taken with respect to ff and ιy\iota_y. It is a scheme over κ(y)\kappa(y).

Remarks

The projection Xy→XX_y \to X is a homeomorphism of the underlying space of XyX_y onto f−1(y)f^{-1}(y). Example: let f ⁣:Spec⁡ℤ[i]→Spec⁡ℤf \colon \operatorname{Spec} \Z[i] \to \operatorname{Spec} \Z and y=(p)y = (p) for a prime pp. Then Xy=Spec⁡(ℤ[i]⊗ℤ𝔽p)=Spec⁡𝔽p[x]/(x2+1)X_y = \operatorname{Spec}(\Z[i] \otimes_\Z \F_p) = \operatorname{Spec} \F_p[x]/(x^2 + 1). For p=5p = 5 this is Spec⁡𝔽5[x]/((x−2)(x+2))\operatorname{Spec} \F_5[x]/((x-2)(x+2)), two points. For y=(0)y = (0) the fiber is Spec⁡ℚ(i)\operatorname{Spec} \Q(i), the generic fiber. Non-example: the fiber is in general not the reduced point structure on f−1(y)f^{-1}(y). Let kk be a field with 2≠02 \ne 0, let f ⁣:Spec⁡k[t]→Spec⁡k[x]f \colon \operatorname{Spec} k[t] \to \operatorname{Spec} k[x] be given by x↦t2x \mapsto t^2, and let y=(x)y = (x). Then Xy=Spec⁡k[t]/(t2)X_y = \operatorname{Spec} k[t]/(t^2), which is not reduced, while the single point of f−1(y)f^{-1}(y) with its reduced structure is Spec⁡k\operatorname{Spec} k.

What this page needs for W1

  • an inventory row: the row of the inventory that the node accounts for (0 of 1)
  • a source with a locator (0 of 1)

The writing levels say how complete the text of a page is. They do not measure its truth.
