Residue field of a point
Builds on SchemeStalkResidue fieldLocal ring
Definition
Let be a scheme and let . The stalk is a local ring; let be its maximal ideal. The residue field of at is the field For an open set and , the value is the image of in .
Remarks
Example: for and a prime ideal of , the residue field is . It is isomorphic to the field of fractions of . For this gives for a prime and . For and it gives , so this point has residue field larger than . Non-example: the stalk itself is in general not a field; for at it is , which has the non-unit . For a field , morphisms correspond to pairs of a point and a field embedding .
